Abstract:
The paper looks at grammaticalization of causal conjunctions, which mark cause-and-effect relations, and considers diachronic changes in conjunctions and conjunctive words from the old and middle Hochdeutsch through to the early new Hochdeutsch periods. The research shows that in that time period German conjunctions passed through three consecutive stages, from lexical units to causality markers, accumulating changes depending on their context.
