ROLE RELATIONS IN THE MODERN GERMAN SERMON

Abstract:

The article focuses on the communicative roles of “the speaker” and “the listener” in the modern German language sermon as a way of analyzing the complex hierarchical relationship between the preacher and the audience, and revealing the profoundly dialogical nature of the preacher’s monolog. The speaker may act not only as the subject of the communication but, semantically, as a listener or a third party. The complex system of social and ethical conventions intensifies the differences between the parties; this is reflected verbally, as the speaker seeks to distribute communicative roles, choosing particular language forms and anthropocentric pronouns.
