Abstract:
The article explores P. N. Milyukov’s and A.V. Kartashev’s evaluation of the role religious and national factors played in Russian history, in the context of these two thinkers’ general ideas about church-state relations in Russia. Although both P. N. Milyukov and A.V. Kartashev believed that nations are formed through the operation of objective laws of history, they differed in their assessment of the role of religion and the Russian Orthodox Church in the historical destiny of Russia and its people, Milyukov giving a rather nihilistic assessment of Orthodoxy, and Kartashev viewing it as Russia’s historical mission.
