Abstract:

The article presents linguistic research of the categories of continuity and discreteness, exploring and comparing and the status of natural and artificial as well as regular and occasional segmentation in English, Japanese, and Russian, three languages of completely different structure. It also compares the content of the ‘continuity – discreteness’ opposition in English, Japanese, and Russian, placing special emphasis on lexical transitions from continuity to discreteness and vice versa, and studies the functioning of the ‘continuity – discreteness’ opposition in English, Japanese, and Russian fiction.
