ON AUTONOMY OF SWISS LITERATURE

Author’s name:

Abstract:

This article discusses autonomy of Swiss literature – an issue, on which scholarly consensus has yet to be reached. All attempts to define Swiss literature’s unique character based on language distinctions lead to blurring of its boundaries with German, French, and Italian cultures and literatures, while attempts to base Swiss literature’s autonomy on its Rhaeto-Romanic component tend to impoverish its rich tradition. Currently one of the dominant tendencies is to look at Swiss literature as a phenomenon, exposed to influences of internationalization and globalization.
