Abstract:
The ethnic background of Nizhny Novgorod Mishar Tatars, also known as Nizhgars, is still unknown. One of the versions connects this sub-ethnos with proto-Hungarians, Madjars. In favor of this theory there are a number of ethnonyms, toponymic names, and observations of some ethnographers, but the full picture is still unclear, as researchers’ conclusions remain contradictory even in regard to the process of Turkization of Mishar Tatars’ ancestors.
