Author’s name:

Yury Panchenko

Abstract:

The article attempts to determine ways in which courtesans’ argot yurigo influenced the process of the common language formation in Japan during the Edo period as well as to research the relationship between yurigo and kyotsugo (the common language of modern Japan). With these two goals in view, it describes some peculiarities of the grammatical and lexical subsystems of yurigo, in order to identify the social conditions of yurigo’s functioning during the Edo period and to look at the usage of some of its elements in modern Tokyo.
