THE ROLE OF THE MOTHER TONGUE IN POLYLINGUAL TRAINING OF STUDENTS

Abstract:

The article deals with the controversial issue of the mother tongue’s role in teaching a second, third, etc. foreign language. It looks at the mother tongue’s influence on all linguistic levels separately, in the situation of teaching a primary foreign language and in the situation of interaction of three and more languages. The author analyzes factors that determine the source of interlingual transfer and concludes that in teaching foreign languages it is necessary to consider all aspects of students’ linguistic experience as a whole.
