Abstract:
The article examines the “friend vs. stranger” opposition in the British media discourse, analyzing metaphoric systems of representing German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel as a “stranger” (foreign) politician. It concludes that current metaphoric conceptualizations of the German politician in the British mass make her image positive, while positioning her as “the iron lady,” in the vein of Margaret Thatcher, encourages the British public to see Merkel as a “friend” politician and as someone familiar.
