THE TATAR COMMUNITY OF NIZHNY NOVGOROD IN THE 16TH – 17TH CC.

Abstract:

In 16th – 17th cc. Nizhny Novgorod boasted a sizable Tatar community, large enough to be noticed by foreign observers. The city also had a number of public Tatar facilities and preserved remnants of Tatar place names. The Tatar community’s history is closely linked to the role Nizhny Novgorod played in the relations between the Moscow state and a number of Volga khanates. However, a more comprehensive and cohesive picture of the Tatar community’s life in Nizhny Novgorod is yet to be restored.
