Abstract:

The paper examines the origins of the modern French psychological novel, looking, primarily, to the works by M. de Lafayette and F. Stendhal as part of St. Augustine’s tradition with its interest in people’s spiritual life, and outlining these writers’ contribution to the poetics of psychological fiction.
