Abstract:
The article describes the history of the dramatic poem “Within and Without”, the first serious poetic effort of the Scottish Victorian writer George MacDonald, analyzes its primary themes, motifs, and composition features, discusses its role in MacDonald’s further literary work, tracing its many parallels with his other works of fiction and establishing the poem’s importance as a key to their understanding and interpretation.
