THE IMAGE OF THE WHITE LADY IN THE INTERPRETATION OF RUSSIAN ROMANTICISTS

Author’s name:

Natalya Ilchenko

Abstract:

The paper focuses on how the image of the White Lady functions in the Russian romantic novel and traces the origins of this image to medieval European legends of Weiβe Frau, the German literary tradition, as well as Russian folklore and Slavonic mythology. This approach allows the author to demonstrate the peculiar Russian variation of the widely used European ghost image and its transformation into the “Black Lady”.
