Abstract:

The article presents the results of the research project that describes a fragment of a linguistic landscape: a new model for recording and analyzing the semiotics of the metropolis. Focusing on commercial signs found on children’s toys, the study identifies languages used in the inscriptions, discusses the frequency of their appearance, and specifies three groups based on the appearance of Russian. The research also demonstrates interference of other languages (mostly English) in the functional space of the Russian language and presents an excellent case study of language contact and the narrowing scope of the Russian language’s operation.
