Abstract:
The article presents the 14th century as a crucial period in cultural genesis, characterized, among other things, by the formation of the prose tradition in literature. An important contribution to the development of this tradition was made by writers of mystical prose and, particularly, Richard Rolle. Widely recognized as the central authority and key figure among other mystic writers of the time, Rolle depicted ways of achieving spiritual enrichment in eloquent artistic forms. His literary style, marked by the metaphoric, musical imagery and tone-painting, and a rhythmical arrangement of text, has been defined in research literature as “ornamental prose”.
