Abstract:

The article summarizes the key findings of a corpus-driven research into the semantic changes in the conceptualization and representation of democracy in the American counter-terrorism discourse. The research was conducted on the basis of a specifically designed corpus of about 730,000 words which includes documents and transcripts of topic-related speeches by the leading American politicians of the 1970s to 2010s. The research has shown a considerable widening of meaning associated with the concept of “democracy” in the time frame under study, from its understanding as a largely Western form of government characterized by the rule of law, rights, and freedoms for all to democracy’s understanding as a highest value and its discursive opposition to extremism and Islamic fundamentalism.
