Abstract:
The major conflicts of “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri revolve around the protagonist’s name, Gogol Ganguli, which also appears to be a significant element of the family storyline development as well as a means of connection between the person and the textual space. The conflicts in the novel are associated with the main character’s identification and his changing attitude towards the Indian culture and his own parents, who are seen as its objectification. The characters’ names have a cultural background, a meaning, and a clear origin, which brings forth the leitmotif of a person’s fate as influenced by her name.
