Abstract:

The article focuses on translating terms in the Humanities and the direct dependence of selecting translation equivalents on how these terms were formed and how they function. In the Humanities, one of the primary ways of coining new words is lexical-semantic, which makes the majority of terms consubstantial. The present research is based on a number of contemporary English-Russian and Russian-English terminological dictionaries in various fields of the Humanities (politics, law, history), and the linguistic material is presented as а unity of the general and the individual in order to reveal specific and recurrent features of the translation process and to work out certain norms for improving the quality of translation. The authors also describe the processes of terminologization and determinologization in the terminological systems of different fields of the Humanities and study various ways and methods of translation and selection of translation equivalents.
