CULTURE-SPECIFIC REALIA IN ENGLISH-SPEAKING ONLINE COMMUNICATION OF RUSSIAN STUDENTS

Abstract:

The article discusses culture-specific realia (CSR) in the process of internalization of domain-oriented English lingua franca (DOELF) by non-native speakers. It claims that the cultural component of ELF communication is formed in the process of secondary socialization of non-native speakers, including acquisition of English CSRs as an instrument of socialization. The author offers a new interpretation of CSRs, based on samples selected from Internet blogs of Crimea Federal University students. It is argued, that, firstly, there is double transference of CSRs: from American English into international English, and then from international English into DOELF and national languages of non-native speakers. Secondly, extra-linguistic contents of the contacts of global English with national languages are distinctive in that the transference of linguacultural phenomena doesn’t mean borrowing separate CSRs but, rather, accommodating entire sectors of the global English-language reality covering various areas of human activity.
