Abstract:
The article discusses the specificity of the narration in the early novels by Joseph Roth (1894–1939) in the context of the aesthetic concept of “the new objectivity.” The category of truth, important for the “new objectivity,” was there identified with a raw document, an authentic testimony, and the article analyzes Roth’s position towards these categories. In the earlier novels Roth uses strategies that allow him to represent his novel as an authentic testimony with the narrator’s special role as a witness of the events. Each of the early novels by Roth shows a specific view of the implementation of the category of witness.
