Abstract:
Peculiarities of modern German in Austria as well as the role and functioning of its dialects within the system of Austrian national variants of German remain of great interest to contemporary scholars. The author offers his own definition of “a dialect” in the context of modern linguistic research and outlines principal tendencies in the development of Austrian dialects. Using a Facebook-based survey of eighty Austrian respondents (native speakers), the author draws a number of conclusions about the dialects‟ status, social base, and spheres of use.
