CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE BEAT COUNTERCULTURE: THE “HOLY BARBARISM” OF JACK KEROUAC

Author’s name:

Oksana Belyanskaya

Abstract:

The article discusses the concept of “holy barbarism” implemented in two novels by the American beat writer J. Kerouac, On the Road (1957) and Big Sur (1962). The concept hypothesizes that the imaginative systems of the novels feature the focus on the characters‟ self-understanding and their resentment of the civilized values present in the conformist society. The themes stated are revealed as part of the triunity of the author, the protagonist, and the main character. Overall, one may conclude that in these two novels the concept of “holy barbarism” is seen as a method used to critically understand the self and to perceive reality in a rebellious manner.
