Abstract:
The article considers two possible vectors of linguistic-cultural identity changes in the era of globalization. Striving to conform to the dominant culture through acquiring lingua franca, partial erasing of one‟s original mother tongue, and changes in one‟s initial linguistic-cultural identity is juxtaposed to deliberate preservation and enhancement of minor cultural identities and minority languages. The paper analyzes the linguistic landscape of Kazan as an example of an initially bilingual urban entity turning multilingual due to globalizing trends.
