Abstract:
The article traces the evolution of the image of Russia and Russians in the narratives of modern American political drama TV series, looking more specifically at The West Wing and The House of Cards, and identifying the means of constructing this image as well as its principal characteristics and functions. It concludes that despite the many standard, stereotype-based characteristics imported from one series to another, specific representations of Russia and Russians in American political TV dramas often depend on their type of narrative, and their role varies from that of the enemy / anti-hero to that of rival /opponent and serves to reinforce the American national self-narrative of (at best) the nation of high and universal democratic ideals and (at worst) the rational and pragmatic agent in the ideal-less world of postmodern politics.
