Author’s name:

Karine Chiknaverova

Abstract:

The article analyzes social and psychological aspects of students` adaptation to studying a foreign language in non-linguistic universities within the framework of their general and professionally-oriented studies. It identifies the conditions that students have to adjust to and students’ age-specific characteristics as two major factors influencing the rate and quality of such adaptation. The author describes organizational and didactic conditions of teaching which would be conducive to optimal adaptation, lists prerequisites for their successful implementation, and specifies adaptation-conscious stages of teaching a foreign language at non-linguistic universities.
