PECULIARITIES OF TERMS OF ADDRESS REFERRED TO MIXED GENDER GROUPS IN AMERICAN ENGLISH

Abstract:

The article explores sociolinguistic and semantic characteristics of terms of address (TA) referred to mixed gender groups in American English with a particular focus on the “guys / you guys” vocative due to its most frequent use in group discourse. On-line forum data analyzed reveal a wide range of opinions in American society on acceptability / unacceptability of this TA due to ideas of political correctness.
