THE PERCEPTUAL SPHERE “SMELL” AS A SOURCE OF METAPHORIC TRANSFER IN MODERN GERMAN

Author’s name:

Natalia Shnyakina

Abstract:

The article considers the role of a person’s perceptual experience in understanding entities that are not given to her through direct observation, taking as an example the perceptual sphere of “smell” and looking at its linguistic representation in various parts of speech. The analysis enables the author to draw a conclusion about the similarity of olfactory sensations with some mental operations, namely: identification of an object and its evaluation.
