ALTERNATIVE HISTORY IN PAUL AUSTER’S NOVELS: TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE IN HISTORICAL MEMORY

Author’s name:

Marina Bronich

Abstract:

The paper considers how the model of American alternate history is used in Paul Auster’s postmodernist novels where history narratives are embedded into the main story emphatically as texts written by some of the characters. Auster constructs his alternate reality as a patchwork of personal impressions and reminiscences as well as traumatic experiences from the historical memory, offering it as a symptom of social discomfort.
