Abstract:
The article examines forms of the imperative used to express the meaning of suddenness – that is, the “dramatic” imperative. The author discusses reasons for the emergence of such use of imperative forms, describes in detail the features of the “dramatic” imperative based on the analysis of a large number of examples, summarizes the range of verbs more frequently used in this form, and specifies methods of their translation. By way of comparison, the article also points out the main differences between the imperative in its direct meaning and the “dramatic” imperative in the Russian language.
