Abstract:
specifically, of combinations between the progressive and state-denoting predicates, normally referred to as state situations like ‘ John is being angry. ’ The article argues that the progressive serves to distinguish between temporary and non-temporary conditions and shows that the result of combining a normally state-denoting predicate with the progressive gives the predicate an agentive meaning. The paper claims that by using the interpretative progressive the speaker indicates his interpretation of somebody’s behavior. What is expressed as ‘being angry ’ is the fact that the anger is externalized and observable.
