Abstract:

The article presents the analysis of modern trends in the development of German syntax with-in the framework of a holistic approach. The dynamics of syntactic changes of any given lan-guage is considered from the standpoint of its genesis — ontogenesis and phylogeny. The us-age-based theory of language acquisition — where language structures are seen as cognitively motivated, accompanied by a complex of cognitive processes, and arise from usage – serves as the foundation for formulating the research hypothesis and conducting the primary analy-sis. The relevance of the article lies in identifying the key trends in modern German syntax and the main factors that determine syntactic innovations, with the emphasis on gender-related, pragmatic, and other aspects. The author describes both regular and less-known syn-tactic facts associated with the historical and modern state of German syntax. The novelty of the research lies in giving definitions for and descriptions of modern syntactic trends against the background of different types of discourse, in explaining and defending new linguistic terms, and in providing non-trivial interpretations for a number of cognitive and linguistic concepts. The article analyzes actual linguistic processes of (de)morphologization, nominali-zation, verbalization, etc. within the framework of syntax, paying special attention to concrete examples of the structure of German phrases and sentences and outlining new directions of syntactic research. It contributes new theoretical considerations to the field of grammatical methodology which may be helpful for those interested in the theory of the German language. The language material analyzed by the author may have additional practical value for all stu-dents of German.
