Abstract:

The article analyzes the lexical and semantic features of modern German youth metaphors. The aim of the study is to see how metaphors function in the language of modern German youth in terms of their variability, as well as to determine the role of the metaphor in the pro-cesses of linguistic changes in the standard German language. The novelty of the research lies in analyzing the semantic structure of metaphorical units, describing conceptual source spheres and target spheres of youth metaphorization, as well as identifying the main concep-tual metaphors that reflect key spheres of interests of modern German youth. The methodo-logical basis of the study are the publications of modern authors in the field of sociolinguistics (E. Neuland, P. Schlobinski, H. Ehmann, V. I. Karasik), as well as the works of Russian scholars on the metaphor as a way to categorize the world (S. A. Khakhalova, O. I. Glazuno-va). The authors demonstrate how metaphors serve to convey semantic nuances and axiologi-cal content of lexical units. The study uses the method of continuous sampling from youth language dictionaries (PONS, Ehmann, Heinemann) as well as the methods of direct transla-tion, semantic analysis, conceptual analysis, and component analysis. The study establishes the metaphor’s enormous potential for creating linguistic variability and its capacity for com-bining linguistic units with very different lexical meanings, citing the youth language as vivid proof of its conclusions. The youth language has always been a source of linguistic innova-tions and experiments, and the metaphor proves to be a very effective tool in this context, since it is capable of performing the functions that are inherent to the youth language itself. Key words: metaphor; youth language; variability; concept; conceptual metaphor.
