Abstract:

The relevance of the research lies in identifying new effective forms and methods of develop-ing communicative and lingua-cultural competencies of Russian students studying Chinese. The article analyzes the concepts “idiom,” “zoomorphism,” and “biomorphism,” reviews zo-omorphic idioms and their classification in the Chinese language, examines the role of zoo-morphic idioms in teaching Chinese, and emphasizes the connection between learning lexical units and shaping learners’ understanding of Chinese cultural codes. Given that zoonyms ex-press very nuanced ethno-cultural understanding of the world by native speakers, the article warns readers about possible discrepancies in perceiving animal images by various cultures which may result in communicative misunderstandings between representatives of different ethnic groups. Hence the authors describe a possible methodology of working with zoomor-phic idioms and ways of using them in the educational process. They highlight the importance of comparative analysis of idioms with zoonyms in Chinese and Russian and of taking into account Russian students’ communicative, ethno-cultural, and ethno-psychological character-istics. The article offers examples of tasks and exercises based on zoomorphiс idioms and emphasizes the idea of using a wide range of communicative exercises of diverse types and formats in order to help students become aware of different meanings that zoonyms and zoo-morphic idioms take in different contexts. The authors make inferences about the lingua-methodological potential of zoomorphic idioms when teaching Chinese, focusing on the im-portance of using these idioms in order for Russian students to learn new vocabulary in effec-tive ways and for them to further develop their communicative and linguistic competencies. The proposed approach to studying Chinese may be of interest to those who study methodol-ogies of teaching foreign languages, since it is based on the close relationship of lingua-culturology with the zoomorphic code as an integral part of any given language picture of the world.
