Abstract:
Mockery is an essential element of humorous implication, typical for British communication; it fulfills various functions and can be expressed by different linguistic means. The article looks at juxtaposition as one of the ways of expressing mockery in speech and, utilizing the strategic-communicative approach, defines some of its functions, relating them to specific sets of pragmatic factors in communication.
