Abstract:
The article examines onomasiological properties of the substandard lexicalphraseological system of New Zealand English (first laying the necessary theoretical
foundation for the discussion), and offers a classification of substandard lexical items with metaphoric and metonymic transference, drawing special attention to the functions of metaphors and metonymies in the lexical system of the New Zealand vernacular.
