Abstract:

The article analyses verbal descriptions of smell perception in modern German, describing various types of smells, represented in German, and demonstrating the importance of everyday knowledge for object categorization. It also shows the diversity of language explication for various kinds and nuances of smell, and highlights the role of smells in describing situations, memories, feelings, and personal experiences.
