Audiovisual Translation in the USSR and Russia: a Brief Historical Retrospective

Abstract:

The article looks at the development of audiovisual translation in the USSR and the Russian Federation from a diachronic perspective. By showing that audiovisual translation took many different forms over the years, it highlights the factors shaping modern practices of audiovisu-al translation. The author has designed her research as a historical retrospective starting from the beginning of the 20th century and ending with the current state of audiovisual translation. The major aim of the research is to draw a parallel between the peculiarities of Russian histo-
ry and audiovisual translation practices used at each period of its development. The paper draws upon different sources including scholarly articles, documents, diaries, multimedia, films, etc. Moving from the period of silent movies towards the modern age of cinema, the author describes the most prominent practices supported by real-life examples. The author starts with analyzing techniques of the early audiovisual translation by studying the intertitles to silent movies. Special emphasis is put on the period of the 1930-40s, marked by the transi-tion from dubbing to subtitling, which defined the future of Russia as a dubbing country. The author discusses the problem of censorship in audiovisual translation and, passing on to audi-ovisual translation in the post-Soviet period, gives a detailed description of the famous Rus-sian voiceover which includes mock “Goblin translations.” In conclusion, the author exam-ines such modern translation practices as fansubbing and fandubbing.
