Abstract:

The article tackles the problem of ethnocultural specificity of units of the grammatical level of the language system. Within the paradigm of  culturological linguistics, the study employs the following methods: the method of semantic interpretation, contrastive analysis, and culturological
commentary. The focus is on the grammar of present-day English. The author postulates that the axiological world perception of the nation is reflected in the grammar of its language which as a peculiar conceptual scaffolding for the human mind that arranges fragments of the surrounding reality into a coherent whole. Special attention is paid to the grammar of the speaker which embodies the way native speakers use the language means at their disposal when formulating thoughts. A number of the most important grammatical concepts for English-language communication are defined: temporality (Tense), modality and (in)definiteness. The study is based on the comparison of classical British and American variants
of English. Using written and oral texts from various discursive practices, the author attempts to establish the differences in the grammar of the speaker in American and British linguocultures. The research concludes that in the process of its unique cultural and historic development,
American English generates its own lexico-grammatical code that incorporates information about the core values, priorities and lifestyle of Americans. Further research would involve a detailed analysis of conceptual grammar structures that function in both cultures, which would enable us to single out sub-concepts, define culture-bearing grammatical forms, as well as describe the role of the national grammar in the mental code of a linguistic personality. The practical value of the study lies in potentially including its results in ESL/EFL programs in order to enhance students’  mastery of foreign language communication skills..
