Abstract:
Unprecedented anti-Russian sanctions, which were introduced in 2014–2023, have had an impact not only on economic activity, but also on economic vocabulary and terminology. The goal of the re-search is to analyze facts of quantitative and qualitative variability of economic terminology under the influence of these sanctions. Quantitative variability means variability of expression, i.e. its for-mal variability, which can be tracked, for example, by recording neologisms and emerging new connotations of terms. Qualitative variability means variability in content, i.e. its semantic variability. Using the method of continuous sampling, connotative analysis, component analysis, and corpus sta-tistical analysis, the author examines regulations and official documents of the Russian Federation, the EU, and the USA as well as materials from Russian media, published in 2014–2023. As a result of the analysis of the quantitative variability of economic terminology, 89 terms were recorded whose appearance or updated expression were associated with the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions. The discovered neologisms are mainly formed using various methods of term formation (morphological, semantic, syntactic, borrowing, and abbreviation), and most of them are term-word combinations. Statistical analysis of media materials made it possible to identify six terms that have the highest frequency of use in texts devoted to sanctions: sanctions, inflation, import substitution, capital, exchange rate, and economy. Additional research showed that these six terms relate to the basic concepts of sanctions discourse, and the high frequency of their use leads to the development of the economic terminology system. The qualitative variability of the economic term system under the influence of sanctions was then examined using the example of connotative and semantic changes in the terms sanctions, import substitution and national payment system. The author demonstrates that qualitative variability is expressed through the updating of certain meanings of terms, the emergence of new word forms, the development of their connotations and associative connections, emotional assessments, and image, and makes a general conclusion about the positive dynamics of the economic term system under the influence of sanctions, the high level of its adaptive abilities, and sustainability of its development in the changing conditions.
