Narrative Japanese Titles through the Lens of Linguocreativity

Abstract:

The authors analyze the phenomenon of the title as an integral part of the narrative, which serves both as an engaging factor for the recipient and their first contact with the text. The article emphasizes the important role of the title in the presentation of the narrative and points out its functions: informative, advertising, and visual-decorative. The authors consider the paradigm of linguocreativity associated with the ability to continuously generate unique speech, shifting from its traditional understanding to a more extended one, which includes a non-trivial choice of already known linguistic means used to build an image of an object. The aim of the research is to analyze the linguistic means underlying the names of Japanese narratives within the context of linguocreativity. The theoretical and methodological frame-work of the study is formed by the research of Russian and foreign scholars in the field of linguocreativity, narrative studies, and title studies. The main research methods are descriptive, comparative, and semantic analysis, contextual analysis, morphological and morphemic analysis, and the method of continuous sampling. Manga (Japanese comic strips) and anime (Japanese animation) are used as the research material. The article analyses the ways of constructing the names of Japanese narratives and the linguistic means used for the purpose from the point of view of linguocreativity. The authors examine structural and semantic features of word-form titles, word-phrase titles, and sentence titles to see how linguocreativity is realized, and identify a number of subcategories within each category of titles. For instance, within the category of “word-form titles,” they identify the subcategories of neologisms, dialectisms, and phonetic and hieroglyphic play-on-words; within the “word-form titles” category, they identify the subcategories of a) the use of phonetic and hieroglyphic play-on-words and b) old forms of Japanese and idioms; while the “sentence titles” category demonstrates the use of long names. Several stable structures were also identified. In general, the results of the analysis clearly demonstrate how linguocreativity is realized in the process of forming titles of narratives. The obtained results can open up new research prospects in the field of linguistics and narrative studies, while a comprehensive study of linguocultural codes underlying the names of Japanese narratives may serve as a promising subject for further research.
