Abstract:
The article analyzes the present state of Translation Studies and the role it can play in improving translation practice and the whole system of training translators. After an extensive analysis of academic literature on theory, practice, and didactics of translation, the authors conclude that one can identify three stages in the development of Translation Studies, each with its own specific approach to translation: the first stage of purely linguistic Translation Studies; the second stage characterized by the so called “cultural turn”; and the third stage which formulated a communicative-functional approach to translation. The theoretical significance of the research lies in that it establishes strong connections between theoretical concepts and the practice of training translators. It is argued that the communicative-functional approach enables Translation Studies to fulfill its high mission of revealing the genuine essence of translation and, thus, laying the theoretical and methodological foundations for further developing translation practice and translators training. Based on the communicative-functional approach, the authors offer a new model of forming professional competencies and soft skills of translators, namely: imitation of real translation events in the process of training translators, which enables instructors to immerse students into the realities of translation activity and thus bring them closer to the profession. The article highlights specific methods of project-based imitation of real translation activity on the basis of communicative-functional approach.
