Abstract:
The paper presents an approach to the study of translation quality assessment as a multidimensional problem. Despite the fact that translation quality assessment is generally understood as a purely practical task, the search for effective solution techniques involves taking into consideration the history of the issue, critical interpretation of the current state of the normative and theoretical field of translation studies, as well as an analysis of practical experience in various types and areas of translation. Different viewpoints on the concept of translation quality and a variety of elaborated approaches to quality assessment demonstrate that the issue in question presents an important research problem which calls for the development of an adequate theory based on the specialized research of metatranslation discourse, represented by theoretical and applied works on translation quality assessment by means of theoretical analysis, modeling, description, generalization, questionnaires, participant observation and classification methods.
The historical aspect of the problem refers to the conceptualization of the ideas of correct / incorrect translation in a diachronic perspective, which reflects the attitude to the source and target texts typical for a particular time period. The analysis of available documents, which record the results of critical analyses of translated texts, allows us to obtain more accurate data on the formation of the conventional norm as the main reference point for translators and translation evaluation actors. The study of the theoretical aspect of translation quality assessment was carried out on the basis of the subject — process — result methodology. So far, the main attention of translation scholars has been concentrated on describing assessment results through the classical normative and evaluative categories of adequacy and equivalence, while the evaluative activity and key actors of a decision-making process have not received the full attention they deserve. In various communicative situations, translation quality is assessed by professionals in the field of translation studies, translation practice, and translation didactics on the one hand, and translation commissioners and end users on the other. The process of assessing translation quality is viewed as a type of intellectual activity studied via modeling methods. The practical aspect of the problem involves analysis of communicative situations related to the formation of assessment judgments. The choice of assessment parameters, which include translation errors, successful translation decisions, and the so-called forced translation decisions, is at the cross point between theory and practice.
