Abstract:

This paper explores the specifics of audience perception in the context of a foreign-language audiovisual comedy translated from French into Russian and localized through full dubbing, with a particular focus on intertextual references actualized in the audiovisual text through various modalities. The relevance of the study is driven by both the sustained demand for translated foreign-language audiovisual content and the need to improve the quality of audiovisual translation — especially in films that rely on creating communicative effects through intertextual and culture-specific references. The central research question concerns how semiotic codes across different modalities influence the audience’s perception of intertextual elements and how this specificity should be addressed in dubbing.
As a case study, the authors examine the iconic French comedy Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (directed by Alain Chabat). Employing comparative translation analysis and multimodal transcription methods, the study concludes that audiovisual translation must account for both verbal and non-verbal semiotic codes, particularly when rendering culture-specific and intertextual elements, to achieve the intended communicative effect on the target audience. A viewer survey conducted by the authors supports the hypothesis that the multimodal nature of audiovisual texts significantly influences the decoding and reception of meaning, underscoring the need for further research in this field.
The findings may prove valuable both to translation scholars specializing in audiovisual translation and to practitioners engaged in dubbing foreign-language content.
