Abstract:

This article is devoted to substantiating the need to take into account ethnocultural features when teaching a foreign language as a factor in the formation of ethnic and all-Russian civic identity among younger schoolchildren in the North Caucasus. Taking into account ethnocultural peculiarities is particularly relevant in the North Caucasus Federal District, the most multinational region of the country, where there is no ethnic Russian majority, more than 90 ethnic groups live, and differences in language, culture, and religion create increased risks of misunderstanding. The article reveals the mental characteristics of North Caucasian schoolchildren: emotionality, leadership, a developed sense of national pride, choleric and sanguine temperament types, good physical fitness and communication skills. It is proved that primary school age is the most important period of formation of ethnic identity. The ethnocultural approach, combining the study of native, Russian and foreign-language cultures, allows us to solve the tasks of expanding knowledge about the mentalities of the peoples of the Russian Federation, fostering patriotism, overcoming ethnocultural stereotypes and developing the ability to present oneself as a citizen of Russia. Taking into account ethnocultural peculiarities in teaching a foreign language in the North Caucasus Federal District acts as a unifying mental factor contributing to the positive social development of the region and the unity of peoples. The theoretical significance of the research lies in the systematization of knowledge about the relationship between ethnic identity, regional mentality and methods of teaching a foreign language. The practical significance lies in the possibility of using the results in the development of curricula and methodological materials for schools in multinational regions of Russia, as well as in the teacher training system.
