Abstract:
The article examines the communicative situation of simultaneous interpreting from the perspective of the communicative-functional approach, which makes it possible to consider simultaneous interpreting not merely as a linguistic process but also as a complex communicative event encompassing cognitive, pragmatic, and social dimensions. The study aims to develop a model of the communicative situation of simultaneous interpreting that reflects the interaction among all participants while accounting for both its primary and secondary parameters. The author offers a comprehensive analysis of the communicative situation of simultaneous interpreting, integrating its communicative, linguistic, extralinguistic, cognitive, and situational dimensions. Unlike traditional studies that focus primarily on the linguistic aspects of translation, this article conceptualizes simultaneous interpreting as a multilevel system of interaction in which the interpreter functions not merely as a mediator but as an active participant in communication. Building on the distinctive features of simultaneous interpreting as a specialized form of professional activity, the study presents, for the first time, a generalized visual model of the communicative situation of simultaneous interpreting. The model encompasses not only the core participants in communication (the speaker, the interpreter, and the audience) but also the external communicative environment (the organizers and initiators of the interpreting process, as well as technical support staff), together with the factors affecting interpreting quality. The article further clarifies the role of the initiators of the interpreting process and the extent of their influence on both the process and the outcome of simultaneous interpreting. The practical significance of the study lies in the potential application of its findings to interpreter education (including the development of training methodologies for simultaneous interpreters), the refinement of professional standards, and the development of automated translation systems through the modeling of communicative conditions. The proposed model of the communicative situation of simultaneous interpreting may serve as a tool for analyzing authentic interpreting situations, identifying potential communication breakdowns, and developing strategies to address them.
