Abstract:

The article proposes a classification of communicative situations in audiovisual translation, using the genre and format of the audiovisual work as its principal classification criteria. It examines such genres as documentaries, news and information programs, commercials, television series, animated films, video lectures, video games, and others. The theoretical foundation for identifying and analyzing communicative situations in audiovisual translation is the communicative-functional approach, within which translation is viewed as an activity carried out in specific communicative situations and oriented toward a particular purpose determined by the initiator of the translation. The communicative-functional approach makes it possible to regard translation not merely as the linguistic transformation of a source text into the language of the target audience, but also as a complex communicative process that takes into account extralinguistic factors and the goals of all participants in the act of bilingual communication, including the sender of the source message, the translator, and the recipients of the translation. The needs and objectives of the initiator (or commis-sioner) of audiovisual translation are of primary importance, since that participant’s role determines the specific characteristics of the communicative situation.
The classification of communicative situations proposed in the article makes it possible to identify the distinctive features of audiovisual translation that differentiate it from other forms of translation. The communicative situations identified provide the basis for examining the professional activity of the initiator (or commissioner) of the translation and will subsequently serve as a framework for determining the goals and objectives of audiovisual translation from the perspectives of both the translator and the recipients of the translated text. The study also examines the place of audiovisual translation within the proposed classification of communicative situations, taking into account the characteristics of their primary and secondary parameters. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the parameters of monolingual and bilingual communication, together with an anal-ysis of the concept of ‘communication’ as applied to translation, the study concludes that primary parameters play the dominant role in audiovisual translation. By contrast, parameters classified as secondary — such as direct contact between the communicants, the form of contact, and their spatial arrangement — cannot be distinguished in audiovisual translation.
