Abstract:
The article looks at the historical development of precedential grammar meanings of modal verbs in the German language, using the verb wollen as a representative example. The author provides a historical perspective on German modal verbs in different phases of the development of the language and goes on to analyze the correlation of their morphological and semantic-syntactic characteristics, which enable modal verbs to undergo the process of grammaticalization.
