Abstract:
The article looks at a number of current issues and challenges in designing course books for learning Russian as a foreign language (RLFL). The author introduces an assessment framework and methodology that uses didactically oriented sociocultural analysis as a means of evaluating FLT materials. She then discusses some results of applying this methodology in teaching RLFL, specially focusing on typical cultural inaccuracies and distortions in existing course books, which result from neglecting modern principles for teaching students the Russian language and culture. The paper provides some guidelines for
improving the quality of RLFL teaching materials.
