READING FACES: PHYSIOGNOMY IN GEORGE MACDONALD’S REALISTIC NOVELS

Author’s name:

Olga Lukmanova

Abstract:

The article examines the influence of physiognomy and phrenology on Victorian art and literature, specifically focusing on the role and uniqueness of using  physiognomic principles and conventions in descriptions of characters’ physical appearance in George MacDonald’s realistic novels. Clearly relying on high  recognizability of various physiognomic ‘types,’ MacDonald utilizes them to provide the basic interpretative direction for the reader and to emphasize the dynamic  ature of his protagonists’ appearance, where the progressive shaping of the outer form goes in increasing harmony with the inner development
and produces the integrity of the fully realized human potential.
