Abstract:
The article analyzes German words that are marked in dictionaries as ironisch, seeking to identify the mechanism of forming the ironic connotation in secondary meanings of polysemantic words, which is based on the hyperbolization of certain qualities and properties of designated denotations in the process of metaphorization. The source of the appearance of ironic connotations lies in associative connections and background knowledge about the objects of reality.
